Siouxland Community Health Center (SCHC) is a federally qualified community health center serving nearly 40,000 patients annually at its Sioux City, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska locations. Last year, SCHC was recognized by Health Services and Resource Administration (HRSA) as a Health Center Quality Leader and an Access Enhancer. SCHC embraces its mission of “Inspiring and empowering our community through health equity for all.”
Dr. Thor Swanson (1965-2015) was a medical doctor at SCHC from 2000-2006 and 2010-2015 until his untimely death from osteosarcoma cancer. Dr. Swanson was also a practicing pastor in the Siouxland community. After volunteering as an educator, pastor and physician in Kijabe, Kenya, Dr. Swanson considered serving the marginalized in our community his privilege and life’s work. He worked tirelessly for those living with HIV and for families that had no safety net. He served our community as an expert in biomedical ethics and he treated everyone he met with dignity and compassion. He was a life-long learner and received his doctorate in medical ethics posthumously in 2015. Dr. Swanson shared his love for learning with his family and his patients.
