The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to host a first-of-its-kind civics competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities.
In the first round of the contest, local 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students participated in an essay competition. Judges selected 20 finalists to participate in the local live quiz event on April 1st to test their civics knowledge. The top three winners will move on to the state competition in August.
FIRST PLACE - $500 CASH PRIZE
SECOND PLACE - $250 CASH PRIZE
THIRD PLACE - $125 CASH PRIZE

Join us as STARS celebrates their 40th anniversary.
Special Troopers Adaptive Riding School, STARS has been providing Equine Assisted Services to the Siouxland community since 1984. STARS provides opportunities for anyone ages 2 and up that has a diagnosed disability to interact with horses in Adaptive Horsemanship classes such Horseback Riding or Ground Work. Equine Services is also available at STARS for individuals, 13 or old working with a Mental Health Counselor, that would like to experience a client lead session with horses as a part of their team. Horses are incredible partners in the STARS program and a simple interaction with them can be the difference in someone’s day. The STARS program is only possible with the help from volunteers that offer their time regularly and the financial support of donors in our community.

| Apr 17 - Apr 18 69th Siouxland/Washington Conference |
The Siouxland/Washington Conference, held every Spring since 1954, is a unique opportunity to join with community leaders from the tri-state area to travel to Washington, DC and present regional issues of importance to our Congressional delegation. Conference attendees have the opportunity to discuss issues with each of the six Senators representing Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota, as well as the eight Representatives from the three states. Attendees participate in a two-day schedule packed with meetings around the Hill. The tradition-rich event also boasts a steak reception on the first evening of the conference where conference goers mingle one-on-one with the tri-state Congressional delegation in an informal setting.

A Little About Bob
Bob or "Dad" was a hard worker that believed in giving back to his community. He loved his family, friends, and having fun. He believed you could accomplish anything if you just put your mind to it.
Dad was owner and operator of Heiss Brothers Inc. for over 50 years in Marietta, Ohio. Throughout his career, he built over 1,000 homes both in and around the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Bob enjoyed hunting, farming, playing cards, and raising his kids and grandkids. He was raised on his family farm, which later became Heiss Hollow-one of his passions involving family and friends.
A Little About Ellen
Ellen or "Mom" was known for making delicious, home-cooked, comfort food that her children and grandchildren cherish to this day. She was devoted to her family and took great joy in creating special and long-lasting memories for them, both in gifts that she made and experiences she created. With Mom, "Please" and "Thank You" became the standard within the Heiss family, and a nice, long hug was required if you knew her. She always wanted to make a positive difference in others' lives. Mom paid close attention to good-quality food, cleanliness of the restaurant, and how people were treated.

In April, the FBS celebrated 25 years as Siouxland Chamber of Commerce members. In early May, the FBS will complete the implementation of a barcoding system and new warehouse equipment, which was funded through MRHD Impact Match and Discretionary Grants. The membership with the Chamber has afforded The Food Bank of Siouxland a voice in the Chamber and greater Siouxland community, with members of the Board of Directors and staff having held positions with Chamber Board of Directors and as Chamber Ambassadors. MRHD has been incredibly strong in their support of the Food Bank of Siouxland’s mission over the years. Many of the FBS’ current systems would not be in place without the support of MRHD, providing the Food Bank to ability to live our mission of “Leading Siouxland in the fight against hunger”, in an effective and efficient manner.

The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce, SIMPCO, Siouxland District Health Department, Downtown Partners, and the City of Sioux City have partnered together again this year to host Bike to Work Day. Bike to Work Day, endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation and promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, is part of a national effort throughout the month of May to highlight the benefits of bicycling and to offer proof that it is feasible to leave the car at home for some commutes.
Trade your car for your bike for the Sioux City Metro Bike to Work Day on May 17th. If you can't bike all the way from home, don't worry, you can still participate. Bring your bike to work, unload it, ride some of our tri-state trails, and then stop by the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce for a complimentary breakfast, health & fitness vendors, and a chance to win prizes. Breakfast is hosted in the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce parking lot from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM. Bike to Work Day t-shirts are available for purchase at the Siouxland Chamber for $10 and will be available at the event.
The Siouxland Chamber is encouraging our membership to participate and become more familiar with our tri-state trails. If your company participates, please take a picture of your group at the Chamber for breakfast, tag the Chamber, and you will be entered to win a pizza party for up to 20 people courtesy of Wheelhouse Bar & Grill.
